Carillon

I play the carillon, or a tower of bells. There are only around 600 carillons in the world! And it’s all mechanical.

I love this esoteric instrument: its dissonant overtones, how the sound travels off rooftops and around building corners, the crooked staircases and ladders up to the playing cabin. I gave a TEDx talk on the carillon in 2013.

My concerts are usually in the summer and often in Belgium or the Netherlands, where there are a lot of carillons. But you can watch some videos on YouTube!

I’ve written three compositions for carillon: Circle in Square (2015) which won first prize in the Zwolle Carillon Composition Contest as well as the audience prize; Icosido (2017), commissioned by Bok Tower Gardens for the 23rd International Carillon Festival; and as swiftly and fading as soon (2018) which is published by the Guild of Carillonneurs of North America. And I’m honored to be included in the International Bibliography of Carillon Music by Women, Transgender, and Nonbinary Composers!
